Will tooth whitening destroy the enamel of my teeth?

A carefully chosen tooth whitening system does not destroy or wear away the enamel of your teeth. We use the Colgate Visible White take home bleaching system because:

- It has a neutral Ph and is very gentle on teeth
- It does not contain any abrasive particles.
- It is formulated to prevent dehydration of your teeth.
- It can be used very safely when carried out and supervised by experienced dentists.

What about the whitening products sold in supermarkets?
Do they work?

These do-it-yourself kits work in a similar fashion to the dentist-supervised systems. However they do have some major disadvantages.

-The mouth trays for applying the bleach to your teeth are made to fit everyone, so it is unlikely that they will fit properly. The customised trays used at North Balwyn Dental fit comfortably over your teeth and enhance the effectiveness of the gel.

-The bleach concentration in supermarket whitening products is more diluted than the professional systems. When you use a D-I-Y product, the result will not be as dramatic and will take a much longer time.

-Some supermarket whitening toothpastes have been known to contain abrasive particles. These can cause wearing of your teeth. The bleaching agents we provide do not have the abrasive action.

What is the procedure?
During your first appointment at North Balwyn Dental, we take some impressions (moulds) of your teeth. These are used to make the custom-made trays. It takes around a week to make these trays. At your second appointment, we check the custom-made tray in your mouth to ensure it fits accurately and give you clear instructions on how to use the bleaching agent. You will wear the trays with the bleaching agent for 30minutes a day, at a time to suit you, for a period of two weeks. You will see results in as little as three days. Two weeks later, we assess the color improvement in your teeth at a review appointment.

How long do the results last?
Around 90% of our patients who have bleached their teeth report that the results can last for two to three years after the original treatment. But this depends on your personal habits. If you smoke or drink a lot of coffee, tea, red wine and some soft drinks, you may find the results don't last as long. Once you have achieved optimal results, you may need to do regular 'touch ups' to keep you looking your best. Re-treatment time is much shorter than the original treatment.

What are the potential side effects of bleaching?
A small number of people experience mild sensitivity. If necessary, we can reduce your whitening regimen from everyday to every second or third day. If you follow our instructions, you can usually avoid any problems. We provide you with a toothpaste for sensitve teeth to use during the bleaching process.

What results can I expect?
At your first consultation, we match your current tooth shade and give you a realistic idea of the colour you may be able to achieve. The Colgate Visible White system is clinically proven to deliver visibly white teeth in only three days. In some cases, a two week treatment results in a seven shade improvement in colour. Some people worry that they will end up with a 'fake white smile'. When you use a professionally-supervised take home system, you have total control over the colour of your bleached teeth. If you don't want your teeth to get any whiter, all you have to do is stop bleaching.
